Medications for Anxiety

Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health conditions, affecting tens of millions of adults worldwide. They encompass a range of conditions — including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and specific phobias — all characterized by persistent, excessive worry or fear that is difficult to control. Anxiety disorders are thought to arise from a combination of genetic predisposition, brain chemistry imbalances (particularly involving serotonin and norepinephrine), personality traits, and stressful life experiences. Common symptoms include persistent worry, restlessness, irritability, muscle tension, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and sleep disturbances. Physical symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, or a feeling of impending doom may also occur, especially during panic attacks.

Left untreated, anxiety disorders can interfere with work, relationships, and daily functioning, and are strongly associated with depression and substance use disorders. Chronic anxiety also takes a physical toll, contributing to elevated heart rate, high blood pressure, and immune system changes over time. Treatment typically combines therapy — particularly cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) — with medications. Common medication classes include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), which are the first-line treatments for most anxiety disorders; benzodiazepines may be used short-term for acute relief; and buspirone is an option for generalized anxiety. The medications listed below are among the most commonly prescribed for managing anxiety disorders.
